Foot & Arch Pain
Foot and arch pain can make simple tasks like standing at work or walking around the shops uncomfortable. The cause is rarely just “poor arches” – it is usually a combination of how the foot is shaped, how it is being used and how much load it is carrying.
How foot and arch pain can feel
Symptoms may include:
- Aching or burning along the arch or middle of the foot
- Pain that worsens with longer periods of standing or walking
- Soreness after new activities, shoes or surfaces
- Occasional sharp twinges when the foot twists or bends
The pain may be one-sided or affect both feet.
Possible causes of foot and arch pain
Common contributors include:
- Strain of the plantar fascia and supporting ligaments
- Joint irritation in the midfoot
- Overload of muscles that support the arch
- Flat feet or overpronation contributing to poor force distribution
- Inappropriate or worn-out footwear
Other causes such as nerve irritation or inflammatory conditions are considered when the history suggests them.
How we assess foot and arch pain
We take a close look at both structure and function. Assessment usually includes:
- History of symptoms, work and activity patterns
- Joint and soft tissue examination through the arch and midfoot
- Assessment of foot posture, mobility and leg alignment
- Observation of walking and, where useful, running
- Review of footwear, insoles and any existing orthotics
Treatment options
Management is tailored to the underlying cause and may include:
- Activity and load modification to allow irritated structures to settle
- Strength and control exercises for the foot and lower leg
- Footwear recommendations for better support and cushioning
- Orthotics to improve load sharing through the arch
- Laser therapy or other modalities for selected soft tissue pain
- Further guidance as part of a musculoskeletal foot and ankle assessment
Who we see with foot and arch pain
We see people who stand all day at work, those increasing their walking or exercise, and others who have had long-standing “tired feet” that never quite improve. Some have tried over-the-counter insoles without much benefit.
