Ankle Pain & Ankle Sprains
Rolling an ankle is common in everyday life and in sport. While many sprains settle with time, others leave ongoing pain, swelling or a feeling that the ankle is “weak” or unstable.
Symptoms of ankle sprains and ongoing ankle pain
Typical features include:
- Pain on the inside or outside of the ankle after a twist or roll
- Swelling, bruising or difficulty weight-bearing in the early stages
- A sense of giving way or lack of confidence on uneven ground
- Stiffness or aching after walking, running or sport
Some people have a history of repeated sprains on the same side.
What might be causing your ankle pain
Common issues we see include:
- Lateral ligament sprains from rolling the ankle outwards
- Medial ligament or tendon problems on the inside of the ankle
- Joint irritation or impingement after repeated sprains
- Weakness and poor balance contributing to ongoing instability
Occasionally, more serious injuries such as fractures need to be ruled out, especially early on.
How we assess ankle sprains and ankle pain
Assessment aims to clarify what has been injured and how well it is currently functioning. We typically:
- Review how and when the injury occurred and how it behaved afterwards
- Check ligament, tendon and joint structures around the ankle
- Assess strength, balance and control on the affected side
- Observe walking, and when appropriate hopping, running and change-of-direction tasks
- Review footwear and bracing used during work or sport
Treatment options for ankle pain
Management is tailored to injury severity and goals. It may include:
- Short-term protection, support and load modification after acute sprains
- Progressive strength, balance and control exercises
- Footwear or bracing advice to reduce the risk of re-sprain
- Orthotics if foot mechanics are contributing to instability
- Laser therapy or dry needling for selected soft tissue pain
- Sports-specific planning via our sports foot and ankle injuries service
- Overall guidance within a musculoskeletal assessment
Who we see with ankle pain
We see people who have recently sprained an ankle as well as those with long-standing instability or pain. Many play sports such as football, netball, basketball or run on uneven trails.
